The twelve days of World Cup: 11 days to go...

In days of yore, Scotland would occasionally make the World Cup finals. Going back 32 years, Ally McLeod's unfancied Scots miraculously defeated eventual finalists Holland 3-2 in the group stages, although Scotland were eliminated. Archie Gemmill scored what is considered to be Scotland's greatest goal of all time, dribbling past several defenders before chipping past Dutch great Jan Jongbloed. This was the great Dutch team of the van der Kerkhof twins, Rep, Rensenbrink, Neeskens and Haan (Cruyff was controversially absent).

A reminder that anything can happen in the World Cup once again.

TOMORROW: A controversial end to a truly glittering career...
