La La Land, a series currently airing on BBC3, centres around three characters played by actor Marc Wooton. Gary Garner (a Danny Dyer wannabe), Shirley Ghostman (an androgenous and brazenly fraudulent spiritual medium) and Brendan Allen (a documentary filmmaker) find themselves in unfamiliar territory across the pond, and are each trying to make it big in America. With varied results, obviously...
Like Dennis Pennis or Borat, Wooton remains in character whilst interacting with real people, who are presumably told that Wooton's guise is the subject of a documentary (in order to explain away the camera crew). As Wooton himself has said, reality television is now such a normal part of TV - and wider life in general - that this wasn't questioned by anyone featured during the filming process, allowing the team to film virtually everything without needing to be covert.

In the clip below, Wooton - as hapless filmmaker Brendan - attempts to make a name for himself as the "right-wing Michael Moore" by shooting a documentary glorifying one of America's minutemen, vigilantes who dedicate themselves to removing illegal Mexican immigrants attempting to cross the US border. As Brendan is attempting to film the entire thing in one continuous take, it isn't long before someone makes a mistake and they have to go back to the beginning and start all over...
Episode 4/6 of La La Land is on BBC3 tomorrow at 10:30pm
