I've never liked Vampire things. Films, novels, TV, it's just never interested me. Being Human on BBC3 had a vampire in it, and that was ok, but that's about it really.
True Blood, a huge American hit now airing on Channel 4, contains all of the elements which mean that I should hate it. It's set in the deep south, contains vampires and other supernatural traits, and has the typically blonde heroine. But having seen only two episodes and still not fully grasped what in fact is going on and who is who (I only know two characters names thus far), but it's fantastic.
True Blood is set in an alternative reality in which humans live alongside vampires, although the vampires are heavily persecuted. One scene even featured a TV debate between an evangelical pastor and vampire over 'vampire rights'. Thus far, the heroine, Sookie, has fallen for a 150 year old vampire (although he still looks like a 30 year old man), Bill. The series so far has revolved around these two, with Bill saving Sookie from an attack, who in turn was saving another vampire from an attack from a pair of drainers (people who drain vampires of their blood and sell it, because it apparently carries a high value). While all this is going on, there is also a shitload of sex in it, which is nice.
That's pretty much it for now. It's a really interesting series which I'm going to stick with. I'll blog again as the series advances, so stay tuned.
Dan.
